1. Difficulty Breathing

2. Repeated Vomiting or Diarrhea
Occasional vomiting may not be serious, but repeated vomiting or diarrhea can lead to dehydration and may indicate poisoning, infection, intestinal blockage, or other medical conditions.
Visit your veterinarian immediately if vomiting or diarrhea lasts more than 24 hours or contains blood.
3. Loss of Appetite
Missing one meal may not always be concerning, but if your pet refuses food for more than a day or suddenly loses interest in eating, it may be a sign of illness.
Cats, in particular, should not go long without eating because it can lead to serious liver problems.
4. Sudden Weakness or Collapse
If your pet suddenly becomes weak, collapses, or cannot stand, seek emergency veterinary care. These symptoms may indicate heart disease, internal bleeding, poisoning, heatstroke, or neurological problems.
5. Difficulty Urinating
Straining to urinate, crying while urinating, or producing little to no urine should never be ignored.
Male cats are especially prone to urinary blockages, which are medical emergencies requiring immediate treatment.
6. Seizures
A seizure can be frightening to witness. While some pets recover quickly, seizures may indicate epilepsy, poisoning, head trauma, or other serious conditions.
Keep your pet safe during the seizure and contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
7. Severe Bleeding or Injury
If your pet has been hit by a vehicle, attacked by another animal, or has severe bleeding, seek emergency care immediately.
Even if your pet appears normal, internal injuries may not be immediately visible.
8. Swollen Abdomen
A suddenly swollen or bloated abdomen can indicate dangerous conditions such as gastric dilatation-volvulus (bloat), internal bleeding, or fluid accumulation.
This condition requires urgent veterinary evaluation.
9. Poisoning
Many common household items are toxic to pets, including:
- Chocolate
- Grapes and raisins
- Onions and garlic
- Xylitol (found in sugar-free gum)
- Human medications
- Certain plants
- Household cleaners
If you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Contact your veterinarian immediately.
10. Changes in Behavior
Sometimes the earliest sign of illness is a change in behavior.
Watch for:
- Hiding more than usual
- Aggression
- Excessive sleeping
- Confusion
- Restlessness
- Constant crying or whining
Behavioral changes often indicate pain or underlying medical conditions.
